Understand your options

A smaller stomach.
A different digestive path.

Biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch (BPD/DS) combines a sleeve-shaped stomach with rerouting of the small intestine. Food travels through a shorter portion of the intestine, reducing absorption of calories and nutrients.

The procedure can support substantial weight loss and improve blood sugar control. These effects come with a significant commitment to nutrition and follow-up. Learn more from ASMBS.

Important considerations

  • Surgical risks include bleeding, infection, leaks and blood clots. Rarely, complications can be life-threatening.
  • Reduced absorption can cause protein malnutrition and vitamin or mineral deficiencies.
  • Reflux may worsen, and bowel movements may become looser or more frequent.
  • Lifelong supplements, adequate protein and regular monitoring are essential.

Discuss your personal risks and the follow-up plan before deciding.

Is duodenal switch the same as SADI-S?

They are related but distinct procedures. Traditional BPD/DS uses two intestinal connections; SADI-S uses one. Ask your surgeon which operation is being recommended and why. Explore SADI-S.

How does it differ from a gastric sleeve?

A sleeve changes the stomach. Duodenal switch also reroutes the intestine, reducing nutrient absorption and increasing nutritional follow-up needs.

How much weight will I lose?

Results vary. Ask your surgeon for expectations based on your starting health and the procedure, along with a plan for tracking progress.

Will I need supplements for life?

Yes. Your team will prescribe vitamins and minerals and monitor blood tests. Protein intake and lifelong follow-up are also important.

How long does recovery take?

Recovery depends on your health and the operation. Your team will give you an individual plan for food, activity, work and follow-up.

Can the procedure be reversed?

The removed portion of the stomach cannot be restored. Changes to the intestinal arrangement may sometimes be considered for complications, but require specialist assessment.

Will insurance cover it?

Coverage depends on your plan. Our team can help review requirements and discuss costs. Explore insurance information or payment options.
